Early and longitudinal CHaracterization of speech and language Outcomes for the diagnosis and prognosis of Parkinsonian Disorders (ECHO-PD)
Inclusion criteria- ● Age 18 or older.
● Ability to understand and provide informed consent in the German language.
● The ability to attend regular follow-ups at the DZNE centers and engage with the ki:elements Mili app and/or participate in the automated phone interviews.
● For participants with parkinsonian syndromesthe disease cohort:
o Diagnosis of Parkinson's disease confirmed by a neurologist
- as per the Movement Disorder Society Clinical Diagnostic Criteria for Parkinson’s disease (Postuma et al. 2015)
or
o Diagnosis of atypical parkinsonian syndrome (MSA
- PSP
- DLB and/or CBS) as defined by the current clinical diagnostic criteria (Wenning et al. 2022
- Höglinger et al. 2017
- McKeith et al.2017Yamada et al. 2020
- Armstrong et al. 2013) and confirmed by a neurologist. Diagnostic certainty should be at least clinically possible or higher
- as defined by the diagnostic criteria.
Exclusion criteria- ● Presence of other neurological disorders that could affect speech or hinder the study participation or speech analysis (e.g. epilepsy
- strokes
- active cancer or drug abuse to name a few).
● Presence of respiratory infections or other conditions that could potentially affect the voice.
● Non-fluency in the language of the speech protocol.
● Additionally for the the healthy control cohort:
o A personal or familiyal history of neurodegenerative diseases.
o Self-reported cognitive decline or clinically significant depression.
o Past or current diagnosis of parasomnias or other sleep disorders.
o Past or current instances of unexplained olfactory dysfunction
- such as those potentially related to tobacco use or the misuse of decongestant nasal sprays.
